Drupal: Creating Custom Content Types

At first glance, the Content Construction Kit (CCK) appears to be overwhelming and complex. But, it’s quite simple and elegant. Here it is in three steps:

  1. Create custom content type (in Drupal core)
  2. Add field types
  3. Configure field types

In addition, custom content types can be created:

  1. from the ground up
  2. by adding field to existing Drupal content types (e.g. Page, Book, etc.)
  3. by exporting a content type and importing it as a new content type

The “overwhelming part” is in the field types. There are many unique and some similar field types. Therefore, finding and selecting the appropriate field type may require some research. For example the Content Taxonmy modules:

  1. Content Taxonomy (content_taxonomy)
  2. CCK Taxonomy Fields (cck_taxonomy)
  3. Taxonomy Super Select (taxonomy_super_select)
  4. CCK Taxonomy Super Select Ultra (cck_taxonomy_ssu)

The first place to start is the Content Construction Kit Handbook

Out of the box, so to speak, the CC KIT, comes with the following modules

  1. Content - Allows administrators to define new content types.
  2. Content Copy - Enables ability to import/export field definitions.
  3. Field Group - Allows fields to be grouped into field sets to help organize them.
  4. Option Widgets - Provides check box and radio button selectors for text and numeric fields.
  5. Node Reference - Defines a field type for referencing one node from another.
  6. Number - Defines numeric field types.
  7. Text - Defines simple text field types.
  8. User Reference - Defines a field type for referencing a user from a node.

These module provide the following fied types:

Exporting/Importing Content Type
I have succeed in exporting and importing the following core content types as new types:

  1. Story
  2. Page

, using the following procedure:

  1. Navigate to Administer -> Content Management -> Content Types
  2. Select the “Export” tab
  3. Select a type from the list
  4. Click the submit button
  5. Copy the type’s definition text
  6. Select the “Import” tab
  7. Paste the type’s definition text
  8. Verify that the “Content Type” menu is set to: “<create>”
  9. Edit the “name” and “type” variable values to the types name and content type
  10. Click the submit button
  11. Navigate to Administer -> Content Management -> Content Types
  12. The newly added content type is appears in the list.

These core content types, however, the same procedure fails for the following types:

  1. blog
  2. forum
  3. book

An error is thrown. I am currently investigating this.
